International media are discussing the find by Turkish archaeologists who are excavating in the Nazilli area of the southwestern province of Aydin.

Scientists carried out excavations at the site of the ancient city of Mastaura, which by 80% disappeared underground, and therefore perfectly preserved to our time. Archaeologists have unearthed only a small top layer, but are already amazed at the "amazing features" of the architecture.

The main find was the arena with an antique amphitheater, which is very reminiscent of the Colosseum in its oval shape and dimensions: 188 meters long and 156 meters wide. The remnants of the structure rested beneath a plot of olive and fig orchards. According to researchers, the arena was used for sports games or gladiatorial fights almost 1800 years ago.

“This may be the only fully preserved arena here in Turkey. It is well preserved as it has been buried underground for many years. The main diagram is now visible, and we plan to excavate more this spring, ”said Umut Tunjer, head of the Aydin Department of Culture and Tourism.
